10 (Kamba Ramayanam – 10)

(31-35) Canto of the Country (31-35)

The following five verses are part of the craft of ‘mixed metaphors’ elucidated in our earlier section. Please read through the elucidation part of Verse 30, which would help to appreciate these verses,

Translation: Wild billy-goats, born of the gentle natured ewe, rammed their heads against each other in violent and power knocks, locking their ribbed horns in a fist of fray, the furious thuds that shocked the impregnated clouds and left them with mouths agape, their teeth flashing in rows of lightning.

Elucidation: Violent, warring rams, born of ewes of submissive nature is by itself a picture in contrast. Tradition has it that impregnated clouds in labour rest on mountains, which is echoed in Milton’s

“Mountains on whose barren breast

The labouring clouds do often rest…”

(L’Allegro)

The violent knocks of rams of the forestlands send waves of shock all around, causing the clouds resting on mountains to gasp and go agape, which in turn exhibits their ‘teeth’ in the resulting flash of lightnings. The ‘mixture of elements of different lands’ takes place in the acts of goats of forestland, causing the clouds (of the hills) to flash lightning all around. A poetic expression and interpretation of a natural event. Tamil poetry groups expressions of this kind under the head ‘thar kurippu etram’ or to put it in English terminology, ‘looking at nature through the spectacles of the poet’.

Translation: The angry shouts of men trained in capturing elephants, who leave she-elephants with their calves alone and take only the male elephants as captives and are chaining them (to be trained) makes the pairs of swans that wander on the paddy fields, scatter away in fright.

Elucidation: Trained men take male elephants in captivation and chain them. Their angry shouts trouble swans in the farms to run away helter-skelter. Not the mix of elements – an act in the forest causing something in the farmlands.

வள்ளி கொள்பவர் கொள்வன, மாமணி;

துள்ளி கொள்வன, தூங்கிய மாங்கனி;

புள்ளி கொள்வன, பொன் விரி புன்னைகள்;

Translation: Persons digging for sweet-potato, throw the precious stones that lie under the surface, away. Pelted precious stones hit juicy fruits of mangoes hanging on branches, making them drip. The golden specks of pollen falling from the densely flowering Punnai trees (Calophyllum inophyllum or Alexandrian laurel) form a bed under the branches; and on that bed the swans that surround lotuses go to sleep.

Elucidation: Sweet potato is a product of the hilly tracts; mango belongs to farmland; Punnai grows along lands surrounding seashores. And thus results the amazing mix.

Translation: The songs of farmland lassies sung in accompaniment to their dance, are heard in the dwellings of shepherds, who are masters of the flutes (made of the pods of Konrai fruit and that of bamboo) and put the calves tethered in their sheds, to sleep. The song fills the air and spreads over to yonder lands where the hunter-women stand in guard over fields of millet (and other drygrains) to shoo away parrots, sparrows and other birds. They lose their minds in the songs and the fields go off-guard. The air sweeps across, carrying the song of farmland women, over to the shores, and enchant the hearts of fisherwomen.

Elucidation:–

Translation: Whacked by violent winds, tall bamboo shoots, grown densely on the hills, sway wildy and poke large loads of honeycombs hanging from nearby branches. (So heavy and so many were such combs that were ripped open that) Honey oozing from them swelled in a stream and found its serpentine way down the slopes, causing the illusion of an unusually long and heavy python descending down the rocks. The flow of honey then reached large water-tanks of paddylands, where the red water lilies had already filled all the surface. The tanks filled to the brim, mixed with the flow of honey, started overflowing and the current of the flow was so strong as to break the stem of the tuber, Sembu, planted in the fields. There, honey filled water spread all over the cultivated land, where mollusks bearing the burden of their spiraling shells, sipped on the cocktail.

Elucidation: A kaleidoscope of vivid imagery painted within a short space of four lines, four-foot long, each. How much can one pack within a quartet, sixteen foot long! You have a sample of how much Kamban can pack, above. High hills where tall bamboos grow; and winds howl their way through, violently. You have tall trees whose branches are bent with the loads of honeycombs nearby, that get torn by the sway of bamboo stems. And down flows honey on the slopes of the hill resembling a huge snake. The picture goes on. Amazing is the ways in which a mind of the caliber of Kamban can wield its magic and weave it through words!
