18 (Kamba Ramayanam – 18)

Canto of the City. (11 – 15)

Translation: (This verse if full of word play, which works a series of pun on the bulwark of the city and the Kings of Ikshwaku clan.) The bulwark is similar to the Kings of Ikshwaku lineage because of the ‘measures taken by the Sceptre’ (Regal Rod) (the bulwark is ‘measured with the (measuring) rod’); because of the severing of the heads of Kings that are decorated with diadem, in the battlefield (the bulwark has contraptions that slices the necks of the foes that climb over); because of the quality of acting according to the laws laid by Manu (bulwark is constructed in accordance with the laws of architecture—that which is laid down by ‘Man’); because of its skill in weaponry (bulwark has appliances that can hurl lances etc.); because of its wisdom (bulwark is designed wisely); because of its invulnerability, because of the heights that it scales and because of ‘the sphere of governance’ (or the disc of regality) (bulwark is equipped with devices that can hurl discus at times of war), the Walls of the City was in every like the Kings of the family of Ikshwaku.

Elucidation:

Translation: The City’s Walls were full of countless contraptions and devices that can throw, whirl and shoot anything. There were giant bows fitted onto the bulwark. Innumerable devices that can hurl sharp swords, battle axes, bludgeons, discs, javelins, and pestles over very long distances were fitted on to the rampart. May the foe be as small and numerous as the myriad mosquitoes, or as mighty and large as Gardua, the king of birds. The battle machinery was capable of handling them all—from a body as small as mosquitoe to any large one. Is there anything for me to add, if you see that the ramparts are equipped with such devices that can destroy such minds that think of violating the peace of the land.

Elucidation: The weapons that the ramparts were varied and numerous. Irrespective of the size and strength of the foe, they can raze the foe to the ground. Do not think that they destroy such bodies alone, but even the minds of persons of evil thoughts. What fear is there of this world-wide terrorism in Ayodhya!

Translation: The Kings of the Ikshwaku clan considered their name and their renown more precious than jewels. And, therefore, like the Sun wiping out darkness spotlessly from all over the space over which he rules, they protected their subjects and made them void of all worries (even as natural as Sun dispels darkness). It therefore was sufficient for their sceptre and the Royal Disc (area over which a King’s commands prevailed) to protect the people. The Scepre and the Disc had enough power to reign over the Heavens and all the Directions eight (beyond the heavens). If this were so, (do you ask me) what was the need for a rampart around the city! (I would say that) It is not more than a decorative piece, an ornation for the city!

Elucidation: —

Translation: The Walls of the City (that rose up to the skies) resembled Mount Chakravala and the waters of the ditch surrounding the fortification ran deep and wide like the see surrounding the Mount. The waters ran as deep as the depths to which the minds of those women who sell their bodies can sink. And the waters were as turbid and unclear as bad verses (that lack clarity). But they were well protected and were as impregnable as the feminine waist. Added to this, like the (five) sense organs that always tempt a man into trodding away from the path of rectitude, and when once he sets his foot on that wayward path (the habits that do not relent their hold on him) crocodiles swarmed in the ditch. (There is no escape to the soul that once falls in this ditch.)

Elucidation: —

Translation: A cloud that was floating with its kins in the skies saw the (immeasurably) wide and ditch whose bottoms touched the nether worlds and mistook for the sea. It then dipped, immersed into it and rose up, soaked in its waters, impregnated with the seeds of rain. And then, the cloud (togethr with its kins) found the ramparts that were like unto mountains. And mistaking the bulwark for a mountain, they rested over there, until they rained upon the Walls of the City.

Elucidation: Indulging in wild fantasy and creating such impossible, but logically structured and sequenced imagery is one of the favourites of Kamban. Here we see a sample of the heights that his ‘viewless wings of poesy’ could scale.
