3 The Canto of the River – 3

Knocking on the sluice gates even as elephants do

Translation: Because of the violent knocks on the doors; because it makes the farmers cry with raised hands; because it fills and overflows the channels (like the shimmer of gems on the frontlet piece on the foreheads of elephants); by the swarming of bees; by spilling the string of bells; by pulling the pegs off; by the immense flow (of must) the river gamboled into the fields and surroundings like an elephant in rut.

Elucidation: This verse is vivid in its imagery and rich in its pun on words. It likens the vast energy of the water current to the movements of a warring elephant, overflowing with its venereal secretions. If the நூல்கொண்டு பிணித்த யானை; நொய்யதாம் வேலிக்குள் நிற்கும் சீற்ம்elephants knock their heads violently on the great gates of forts, the gushing waters kick the sluice gates away; if the elephants make the people on their path cry with raised hands helplessly, so does the water; if the elephants glitter with the gems that decorate their foreheads, shimmering like a brook of light, the rushing river fills all the channels in one go, overflows in no time and its waters shimmer too; if the elephants rip the bells that are tied to their bodies, the river rips apart the bells tethered on their way (to sound a note of warning when the tide rises) as it goes; if the elephants pluck the trammels off to which they are tethered, so does the river, pulling off all the pegs driven on the banks to restrain the flow of water; the river is full of water and the elephants are overflowing with must. And so, the river rushes past the farmlands like warring elephant.

Translation: The forests filled with the products of the hills resembled the hilly terrain; the cultivated lands in turn were strewn with the plunder from the forests and had the appearance of the woods; and the last lap of the river, backwaters and the confluence with the sea, the lands leading to sea, were left with paddy and other products of the fields, wearing the appearance of the farmlands. Like the effects of one’s good or evil deeds that make an animal to take birth as a human and human into celestial and the celestial into the beast, the river changed the state of every land in its course.

Elucidation: Coming down the hills, passing through the forests, farmlands and reaching the sea, the river leaves the products of one land in the next, making it appear like the other. The forests wear the garb of hills; farms look like woods; and the land adjoining the seas resemble forests. This change of states is likened to the cycle of births and deaths whereby one life-form attains another form in accordance with the effects of their good and evil deeds.

Translation: Floods rushed through the channels guarded by the farmers, and accompanied by the beats of drum to warn the onslaught of stormwater, throwing about a screen of mist, pearls and specks of gold with its valiant arms of waves, filled and formed a long route of stream, branching off into many rivulets even as a family branches off into a tribe, a lineage, down the generations.

Elucidation: Like a single family branching off into a several lines of descendants in the course of time, the waters gathered themselves in streams, to branch off into rivulets, down the way it coursed.

Translation: The rain waters, coursing down the hills surged across the country to find its confluence in the ocean. As if to show that ‘this is what the numberless Scriptures attempt to describe, but are unable to,’ it started as ‘one’ in the beginning, flowed its varied ways and confluenced into ‘One’, which is the philosophy that the many and varied religions propound.

Elucidation: It was ‘water’ in the beginning, starting as showers. Down the course it assumed various forms, had varying depths and speed, and was known by different names. And it became its ‘one whole’ again when it reached the ocean. To think of it, this is the philosophy that all the religions preach, propogate and propound. The river explains it all. It is the Supreme that takes different forms, different names, referred to in hundreds and thousands of religious debates, while the essence remains One and no more than One.

Beauty abounding all over with the river coursing through.

Translation: The river went through the many groves that were spilling pollen, forests of Champaka trees, through every blossoming garden, through the lands filled byareca palm, surrounded by creepers and every fields, and moved about like the ‘single life’ that pulsates in every form of living.

Elucidation: Tradition divides the forms of life into four, namely, Celestials, Humans, Animals and Plants. The life that pulsates in every form of life remains the same. Sarayu flowed through different groves, woods and thickets, feeding them, sustaining them, and making them grow, thus demonstrating the philosophy that ‘the forms are many; but the life that pulsates in them is one.’
